Artificial intelligence is opening a new window into brain health. By analyzing structural and functional brain scans, AI models can estimate a person's 'brain age'—a measure of neural health that may differ from chronological age. A brain that appears older than its years could signal accelerated aging, while a younger-looking brain might indicate delayed development. This technology, still in research phases, is now being explored in the context of neurodevelopmental conditions, including amblyopia.
Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is a disorder of visual development where the brain fails to process input from one eye, leading to reduced vision. It is fundamentally a brain problem, not just an eye problem. The critical period for treatment is during childhood, when the brain is most plastic.
